Dorothea Victory Leith



DEER ISLE — Dorothea Victory Leith, 96, passed away peacefully July 17, 2012, at Island Nursing Home, Deer Isle. Dorothea was born Feb. 17, 1916, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Frank and Katherine (Harrington) Gifford. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Robert M. Leith.

Dorothea and Robert were lifelong residents of Scotia, N.Y. Her working career included the position of secretary at General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y., until she assumed the role of full-time housewife and mother to sons, William and Robert. Her volunteer career began with the Red Cross in the early years of the Vietnam era, where she played an active role as liaison between the soldiers and their families. In later years she continued her volunteer activities at the Baptist Health Retirement Center. Dorothea and her loving husband enjoyed many years of camping in the Adirondacks of New York and also enjoyed traveling to their favorite destinations on the New England coast. Her talents included cooking, baking, knitting, and crocheting. She also had a tireless love for reading and books.

Dorothea is survived by sons, Robert (Michelle) Leith of Schenectady, N.Y., and Willian (Christine) Leith of Sedgwick; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Dorothea’s family also included her late and beloved brothers, Sheldon, George and Douglas Gifford.

A memorial service will be held at a future date to be announced.
