OBIT-Carol Murphy (photo and flag)flagSOUTHWEST HARBOR — Carol Carter Murphy passed away at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital on Friday, Dec. 19, 2014, at the age of 82. Carol was born on April 30, 1932, in Tremont, the son of James H. (Buster) and Sheila Carter Murphy. He grew up between his home in Seal Cove with his parents and with his grandparents, Benjamin and Helen Carter, on their farm off the Cape Road (Carter Road) in Seal Cove.

Carol graduated from Pemetic High School in 1951. It was there, as a freshman in high school, that he met the love of his life, Irene Stanley. He knew at first sight she was the girl for him. Upon graduation, Carol enlisted in the Air Force. He married Irene in 1952. They were married 62 years on Nov. 2, 2014. They had seven children.

While in the Air Force, Carol was sent to Korea, as a top turret gunner and radio operator in the Korean War. He was also stationed at Fairfield, Calif., Iceland, multiple bases in Maine and Massachusetts and, lastly, Sacramento, Calif. Upon retirement from the Air Force, Carol brought his family home to Southwest Harbor to settle in the home Irene grew up in. He then went to work with Irene’s brother, Ralph Stanley, building boats. He also painted with John Lawler before finally starting his own caretaking/painting business. Years later, after retiring from nursing, his wife joined him in his business until their retirement.

Carol loved any Boston sports. He enjoyed bowling as a young man, but raising a family of seven children did not leave much time for outside activities. He enjoyed being part of his children’s lives.

At the time of his death, Carol was survived by his wife of 62 years, Irene S. Murphy. He is survived by his daughter Julie M. Reed and husband, Jeffrey, of Southwest Harbor; his son Benjamin S. Murphy and wife, Jackie, of Southwest Harbor; his son James M. Murphy and wife, Patti, of Surry; his son Robert W. Murphy and wife, Duanna, of Southwest Harbor; his daughter Gina M.
