Bruce Elliot Thulin

ELLSWORTH — Bruce Elliot Thulin Feb. 6, 1950-Feb. 19, 2012

Bruce Thulin was born Feb. 6, 1950, in Cambridge, Mass., son of Clarence and Jeannette (Stokes) Thulin.

He grew up in the Boston area before moving to Maine in the 1970s. He graduated from the University of Maine with highest distinction with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education. He worked for many years for the Brewer School Department in their special education program. Prior to that, he worked as an assistant teacher at the Multiple Handicap Center of Penobscot Valley. These jobs offered him the opportunity to help many adults and children with developmental disabilities. Bruce also supported himself through a variety of self-employment endeavors, including Volkswagen repair specialist, jewelry maker, antique dealer and singer-songwriter. In 2005, he released his CD of songs about his love for the ocean, “Islands in the Sea.” Bruce loved to spend time in the summer with his family at the camp on Deer Isle exploring the ocean and the surrounding islands. He always described this time as magical. Despite his many accomplishments, he was most proud of his role as stay-at-home dad for his daughter, Holly. Bruce’s CD contains a song he wrote for her titled “Holly’s Song.” Bruce waged a brave battle with a rare form of cancer: hymangiopericytoma He succumbed on Feb. 19, 2012, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. In spite of the limitations his illness presented in his life, he was able to enjoy watching the birds at the feeder, visiting with his loving Hospice volunteers, watching “Curb Your Enthusiasm” with his wife, talking by phone with his brother from Canada, and, keeping in touch with his daughter during her first year of college.

Bruce is survived by his wife, Carol Rosinski; daughter, Holly Thulin; brother, Eric Thulin; sister-in-law, Penny Boyd; sister-in-law, Jane Rosinski; brother-in-law, Gordon Russell; brother-in-law, Jim Rosinski; niece, Andrea Russell; and nephews, Jesse Thulin, Samuel Thulin, and Carl Russell. Bruce is also survived by special family friend, Bob Dick.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, at the Unitarian Church, Ellsworth. Those who wish may make donations in his memory to: Hospice of Hancock County, 14 McKenzie Ave., Ellsworth, ME 04605.
