BAR HARBOR — Barbara Stevens Shirey, 88, died in her sleep Sunday morning Dec. 1, 2013, at her home in Birch Bay Village, Bar Harbor. She was born July 22, 1925, in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Rhea Huffman and Alton Stevens.
Barbara Ann Stevens, known as Barb or Bobbie, received a BA in Sociology from the University of Rochester, Class of 1947. At the U of R, she met fellow student George Bottome Shirey. They married on March 27, 1949, settled in Rochester, N.Y., and remained married until George’s death 46 years later. Barbara was a licensed social worker and worked in the field of mental health services for more than five years. She was recognized for over 2,000 hours of volunteer service at Highland Hospital in Rochester before becoming the co-director of hospital volunteers. She was able to enjoy more than 50 summers on Little Cranberry Island. Despite the challenges of a life with cerebral palsy, she was an excellent driver and loved to ski. Barbara was well known for her sunny disposition, can-do attitude and great sense of humor.
Barbara is survived by her brother, James Stevens of Frederick, Md.; her son, Steven Shirey and wife, Loretta Shirey, of Chevy Chase, Md.; her daughter, Barbara (Shirey) Fernald and husband, Bruce Fernald, of Islesford; and grandchildren, Cameron Fernald of Portland, Robin Fernald and wife, Stephanie Austin, of Baltimore, Md., Steven Shirey II of Chevy Chase, Md.; and Clayton Shirey of Potomac, Md.
A service of remembrance will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, at Birch Bay Village, 25 Village Inn Road, Bar Harbor.
