Alton E. Mitchell passed away with family by his side on May 10, 2020, at Westgate Center for Rehabilitation & Alzheimer’s Care in Bangor. Alton was born on June 24, 1931, in Otter Creek (MDI), the son of Halsen and Ola Gillie Mitchell.

He went to school at Pemetic High, Southwest Harbor. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, later transferring to the U.S. Air Force. He also went to Wentworth Trade School in Boston, for electrical and TV repair training. He worked for Viner’s Music and Utterback Corp. in Bangor. He retired as a civilian electrician at the U.S. Coast Guard in Southwest Harbor in 1997. He was involved with the automation of Maine lighthouses.

He married Margaret Walker in Holden on Feb. 5, 1965, and there they built their home and raised two children, Waverly and Susan. He loved duck hunting, fishing, wood working, gardening, animals and dancing.

Alton was predeceased by his parents; brother Vaughn Mitchell; and sister Joyce Mitchell Perkins. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Margaret; children Waverly Mitchell Cotton of Nottingham, N.H., and Susan Mitchell Robinson (David) of Sidney; grandchildren Miranda Cotton Almeida (Alex), Lindsay S. Cotton, Andrew Beal (Natasha) and Matthew Beal; two great-granddaughters Olivia and Mia Almeida; brother Allan Mitchell (Carole) of Bremerton, Wash.; and by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no funeral service.
