A. Isabelle Barnes

GOULDSBORO and GREENCASTLE, PA. — A. Isabelle Barnes, 92 of Gouldsboro and Greencastle, Pa., passed away Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at Courtland Rehabilitation and Living Center, Ellsworth, with her loving son and daughter by her side. She was born in Clay Hill, Pa., the daughter of the late Howard and Grace (Barnhart) Hollinger.

She attended Clay Hill School and graduated in 1939 from Greencastle High School. She was a member of the First Methodist Church, Greencastle. Isabelle was involved in numerous community organizations and because of her love for local history she was a member of several historical societies in the Greencastle area. She also loved to travel with family and friends, work in her flower gardens, cook and do hand crafts, such as crochet, embroidery and needlework. Isabelle had various occupations in retail and manufacturing and was a high school cafeteria cook and a certified nursing assistant, both for nursing home and private duty. Greencastle was her home until 2009, when she moved to Gouldsboro to live near her daughter and son-in-law. Living in her lake view apartment, she could watch the eagles fly, and the deer, squirrels and turkeys wander across her lawn. She also enjoyed feeding the birds, visiting the ocean in the summer and watching the snow fall in winter.

Isabelle is survived by her son, Larry G. Barnes and wife, Harriet, of East Hartford, Conn.; and her daughter, Barbara D. Flaherty and husband, Charles, of Gouldsboro. Also surviving are her sister, Lorraine Shaffer; and her brother-in-law, Edward Zarger. Surviving grandchildren are Scott Barnes, Jon-Ramsay Barnes, Erin Carpenter, and Marla Flaherty; and four great-grandchildren, Isabella, Sophia, Caleb, and Sophie. Preceding her in death was her husband, Warren G. Barnes; her parents; and her sister, Rachael Zarger.

A memorial service will be held Jan. 11, 2014, in Greencastle.
