BAR HARBOR — A new, income-based rate plan has been introduced at the Mount Desert Island YMCA in an effort to make membership to the organization affordable to more families within the MDI region.
The new payment structure, which affects membership rates for individuals and families earning $55,000 a year and less, is accompanied by a reduced joining fee of $50.
The new rates are intended to ease the financial burden of membership for the “population on the island that say they don’t belong to the Y because it’s too expensive,” executive director Kim Harty said.
The rates provide a discount of $5 per month for those making between $45,001 and $55,000 per year; $11 per month for those making between $35,001 and $45,000 per year; $16 per month for those making between $25,001 and $35,000 per year; and $22 per month for those making $25,000 per year or less.
