ELLSWORTH — Wanted in Ellsworth: one conference center available to handle groups of 50 or 500.
Local economic development officials say Ellsworth needs a conference center, particularly since the Holiday Inn, which reopens Friday as a Ramada, will no longer be operating year-round. The hotel has banquet rooms and tennis courts that were rented year-round by businesses and organizations.
When the hotel closed for renovation, the gap was felt.
Since the closing, the chamber has had over 35 calls from people looking for places to hold their functions, said Micki Sumpter, executive director of the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce.
“It’s been constant trying to renegotiate and find different places for them,” Sumpter said. “We’ve had people call from governmental offices, wedding parties and conferences for tourism. There’s a lot of people calling and we just don’t have the facility.”
