Town Garage is ‘A Wreck’

MOUNT DESERT — The town’s insurance carrier has increased the deductible on the highway garage and everything in it from $2,500 to $25,000 and has excluded the building’s roof from coverage.

The garage, built in 1964 and enlarged several times, is located near the northern end of Sargent Drive. Repairs and other work could cost as much as $750,000.

A loss-control consultant for the insurance carrier, Maine Municipal Association (MMA) Risk Management Services, inspected the garage in June 2008. She said in her report that the building “has deteriorated to where one can see through the cracks in the back wall in the truck bays; other cracks appear to be spreading; and there appears to be some deterioration of the block walls from the moisture.”

The MMA inspector asked the town to have an engineer evaluate the building for “structural integrity and remediation or possible replacement.”
