PENOBSCOT — A program titled “Why Do Women Need a Maine Equal Rights Amendment” is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 28, at 6 p.m. at the Penobscot Community School.
The speaker is Posie Cowan of Equal Rights Maine.
Cowan will discuss the reasons why passing the Maine Equal Rights Amendment is important as well as why some people will not support it.
A bill for an amendment to the Maine Constitution explicitly prohibiting sex discrimination will be voted on by the Maine House of Representatives this winter.
Although the Maine Senate passed it in June by the necessary two-thirds, right now there are not enough state representatives who support it. If the required two-thirds vote in the House is achieved, LD 433 will go to the Maine voters in the fall for final approval.
