Swain Declares for Machias Selectmen’s Race

MACHIAS — Daniel Swain of Machias recently turned in his qualifying signatures to place his name on the June 2 ballot for the five-way race for the Machias Board of Selectmen.

Two seats, both three-year terms, are open in this election.

Voters will vote for two of the five men on the ballot.

Swain is a 21-year-old student of public administration at the University of Maine at Machias. He will graduate in 2010, and intends to make Machias and Washington County his permanent home after graduation.

Swain decided to get involved with town politics after attending last year’s Town Meeting — and seeing barely a handful of residents who also showed up. He was astonished by the lack of turnout, and wants to change that for the 2009 meeting, which is set for Wednesday, June 3.

Voting for town officials takes place at the town office on Tuesday, June 2, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Town Meeting is the following evening at 6 at the Machias Memorial High School gymnasium.
