Surf’s Up in Brooklin

BROOKLIN — Think of the world’s hottest surfing spots, and Maine won’t spring to mind. Think about places with a rich and storied tradition of building wooden watercraft, and Maine tops the list.

While Hawaii remains a sure bet for great surfing, it’s becoming a good bet that wooden surfboards found there and throughout the world are made in Maine.

Brad Anderson and Mike LaVecchia, owners of Grain Surfboards in York, spent last week in Brooklin at one of the world’s wooden boat capitals teaching the art of building surfboards to students at the WoodenBoat School.
