Springers Gymnastics Teams Begin Competition



ELLSWORTH — Young gymnasts at Springer’s Gymnastics Center recently competed in season-opening meets and turned in some solid performances.

At the Andy Valley Gymnastics Center in Lewiston on Jan. 24, the boys’ team faced off against the Bath YMCA and Maine Academy of Gymnastics from Westbrook.

Following are the results:

Level 4, age 6
Owen Baya — first in floor and pommel horse, second in rings and horizontal bar, third in vault and parallel bars and second all-around.

Level 4, age 7
Nathan Mason — first in floor, second in pommel horse, vault and horizontal bar, fifth in rings and parallel bars, second all-around.

Austin Snow — third in pommel horse, fourth in floor, rings and horizontal bar, fifth in vault, third all-around.

Level 4, ages 8-10
Tyler Bechtold — second in vault, fifth in rings, sixth in pommel horse and horizontal bar.

Level 5, ages 10-12
Kyle Adams — first in floor and vault, second in rings and horizontal bar, third in pommel horse, fourth in parallel bars, third all-around.

Dylan Kelley — third in floor and parallel bars, fourthe in horizontal bar, fifth in rings and vault, sixth in pommel horse, fifth all-around.

Ben Politte — fifth in floor, sixth in rings.

Springer’s will be hosting a boys’ meet on Saturday, Feb. 27, starting at 11:30 a.m.

Four girls from the center competed in their second USAG meet on Sunday, Feb. 7, at Dudziak’s Gymnastics Center in Biddeford.

The meet, in which seven teams competed, is like a warm-up for the state championships later in the year, said coach Doug Springer.

All four girls from Springer’s exceeded the minimum all-around score of 30 required to be eligible for the state meet.

Following are the results:

Level 6, ages 7-11
Darcy Kanu — seventh on vault, all-around score of 31.4.

Level 6, ages 12-14
Taylor Wardwell — second on vault, third on bars, fifth on floor, sixth on beam, fifth all-around with score of 30.4.

Level 7, ages 12-14
Ellie Mason — fourth on floor, seventh on vault and beam, ninth on bars, ninth all-around with score of 31.5.

Level 8, ages 16 and over
Liana Arquette — second on vault, third on bars and beam, fourth on floor, fourth all-around with score of 30.55.

On Sunday, the Down East Family YMCA gymnastics team will be competing in Bangor, and will host a home meet on Saturday, Feb. 20, at Springer’s Gymnastics Center.
