Special Meeting Aug. 24 on Land Deal in Winter Harbor

WINTER HARBOR — A special town meeting will be held Monday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. at Hammond Hall to reconsider an earlier vote approving the purchase of a $125,000 property for the new fire station and public safety building.

Engineers say the property will be costly to build upon due to wetlands.

Diana Young, chairman of the Board of Selectmen, said at a meeting Monday night that a draft report by Dirigo Engineering of Fairfield found that construction on the 17.5-acre Esther Coombs property “could easily exceed $100,000.”

At issue is whether the town can back out of its contract with the landowner and, should it not be able to do so, whether an alternative solution might be proposed.

The selectmen had approved the land purchase contingent on approval at Town Meeting June 10. Voters approved the purchase 34-30.
