BAR HARBOR — The town council on Tuesday rejected an attempt from the Criterion Theatre to halve the $4,000 it was fined by the town for making changes to the theater’s marquee without permission.
As part of the proposed settlement, an anonymous donor was ready to step up and immediately pay $2,000 to the town. The donor reportedly said he/she would only do so if the money was accepted as payment in full. Citing council policy and the fear of setting a precedent, councilors voted 5-1 not to accept the settlement offer, with Jane Disney voting in the minority. “It just really sours my palette, but we have to stick with the land use ordinance,” councilor Peter St. Germain said.
