Sewer Connection Fee Protested

BAR HARBOR — A town fee that can cost new businesses tens of thousands of dollars was protested Tuesday during the town council meeting.

The sewer connection fee is a charge assessed to any business or homeowner that creates a new connection to the public sewer, increases wastewater flow, or changes the use of a property. The charge is based on a gallons-per-day calculation outlined in the town code.

Annually, an average $80,000 in sewer connection fees are collected. Since January of 2009, $96,000 in connection fees have been assessed by the wastewater division.

All businesses, new or existing, which involve a change of use to their location, must apply for a sewer connection permit and be analyzed for a possible fee.
