Saturday hikes in wildlands

ORLAND — On Saturdays in July and August, Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust President Sarah LeVine will lead a hike in the 4,500-acre Great Pond Mountain Wildlands.

Hikers will meet at the Wildlands’ South Gate (Route 1) at 10 a.m. Longer hikes (four-plus miles) will alternate weekly with short hikes (two miles).

On Saturday, July 27, there will be a short hike on Hothole Brook Trail to the summit of Bump Hill.

On Saturday, Aug. 3, there will be a longer hike on the new Birches Path to Flying Moose Mountain with a detour to the Forgotten Forest, a section of woodland untouched by the timber harvests of the 1990s. Hikers should meet at the South Gate to carpool to the trailhead.

Hikers should wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, snacks and sun and bug protection.
