BAR HARBOR — State Rep. Elsie Flemings, a Bar Harbor Democrat, and Rep. Richard Cleary, a Houlton Democrat, are engaged. They haven’t set a wedding date and they both plan to run for re-election in November, Rep. Flemings said Monday.
“We will continue to live in our individual districts,” she said. “We are both very committed to our districts and to serving our constituents in the Legislature. We love the work. It is worth the long distance between us.”
That distance, between Bar Harbor and Houlton, is 168 miles.
Rep. Flemings said they have “no immediate plans” for a wedding.
She is in her first term in the Legislature, having been elected in 2008. Her district comprises Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor, Cranberry Isles and part of Mount Desert. Outside the Legislature, she is coordinator of the nonprofit Union River Watershed Coalition.
Rep. Cleary is in his second term in the Legislature. He is a native of Houlton, where he practices law.
