Principal Resigns at Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary

DEER ISLE — The search for a new principal at the Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School could end at the assistant principal’s office.

Union 76 Superintendent Bob Webster said the School Committee learned at a special meeting April 9 that Principal Catherine Ring had resigned, effective at the end of the school year. Ring has served as principal for the past six years.

School Committee members present at the meeting scheduled a follow-up meeting for April 15 to further discuss the search process for a new principal and to interview one candidate for the position, Assistant Principal Mike Benjamin.

Webster said the April 15 meeting was attended by five of the six School Committee members, who used part of the meeting to interview Benjamin.

Benjamin has served as assistant principal since last July 1. Webster said the assistant principal position could be reduced from full time to part time in the upcoming budget proposal that will go before voters in June.

On April 15, the School Committee declined to take any action following its interview because one member of the committee was absent, Webster said. The committee also tabled action on whether to advertise for the position.

He said all committee members are expected to attend a budget meeting April 28, which would include discussion of the vacancy and action on how to proceed with filling the position.
