Police Suspect 5 in Camp Vandalism

MOUNT DESERT — Five suspects have been identified in connection with a burglary and vandalism spree that caused significant damage to 15 camps on the Northern Neck section of Long Pond in Somesville.

Mount Desert police chief Jim Willis said five males – two adults and three boys – are suspected of breaking into the camps some time during the daylight hours of Jan. 18. The police department has been working almost nonstop on the case since they learned about the burglaries on the following day, Jan. 19.

“We were able to identify the suspects through our own investigation,” the chief said. The suspects have been “reasonably cooperative,” he added.

Chief Willis declined to identify the suspects until charges against them have been filed. The case has been referred to the Hancock County District Attorney’s Office for review, he said.
