Parents Group Launches Effort To Build New Surry Playground

SURRY — A group of parents has launched an effort to raise $75,000 by the fall of 2010 to build a new playground at Surry Elementary School.

The Havey children rolled $291.50 worth of pennies, which their classmates at the Surry Elementary School raised for a new community playground. From left: Marissa, 7, Korey, 10, Alicia, 4 and Katlyn, 13.—JULIE HAVEY

The existing playground equipment is original to the school, which was built in the late ’80s.

The equipment is safe but aging and there have been issues with children falling off the merry-go-round. Also, the playground lacks equipment for older children.

Organizer Julie Havey and her husband, Doug, want to build a playground for the entire community to use, not just the school.

The committee members include Naomi Watson, Angela Smith and Heidi Noel-Grindle. The group has begun small fund-raising efforts with a penny drive.

A bake sale at Maine Coast Mall will be held April 11 and a yard sale at the Surry gym on April 25.

The committee is working with playground equipment manufacturer Gametime, which is the company that built the new playground in Ellsworth.

Once the committee has decided on a design, it will begin pursuing grants and requests for larger donations. The Surry Community Improvement Association has agreed to be the group’s sponsor for nonprofit status.
