Otis Vote on Joining RSU Scheduled for Sept. 15

OTIS — The town of Otis will vote in a referendum Sept. 15 on whether to join Regional School Unit 24 (RSU 24), a consolidated district that includes Mariaville, Eastbrook, Ellsworth, Franklin, Gouldsboro, Hancock, Lamoine, Sorrento, Steuben, Sullivan, Waltham and Winter Harbor.

Otis late last year opted not to join RSU 24, and, as a result, the town is effectively paying tuition to send its 48 schoolchildren to Beech Hill School, which Otis jointly owns with the town of Mariaville.

In the meantime, Otis has contracted with RSU 24’s central office to provide a superintendent, curriculum coordinator, special education and school financial services.

The RSU, however, has said it could not offer those services should Otis vote not to join the RSU since the central office must focus on taking care of its member schools.

The vote not to join the RSU was spearheaded by a group of citizens under the umbrella name Otis Coalition for Responsible Education.
