Otis May Go for Third Vote on Joining RSU 24

OTIS — The Otis School Board has voted 2-1 in favor of joining Regional School Unit 24 (RSU 24), which could open the door to a third vote by residents.

At the board’s April 14 meeting, Chairman Kim Steinbarger said she felt joining RSU 24 was the best avenue to ensure the town’s children will be guaranteed a public school education.

In an attempt to close a $620,000 budget gap for 2010-2011, RSU 24 has discussed closing either the Cave Hill School in Eastbrook or the Beech Hill School in Otis.

But the RSU 24 Board, which represents a district that stretches from the Ellsworth area east to Steuben, said closing a school would not happen quickly or be taken lightly.

Steinbarger said if Otis did not belong to a consolidated school district and decided to pay tuition to send the children elsewhere, there was no guarantee a school would have room or be willing to educate certain children, such as those with special needs.
