BUCKSPORT — On Friday, June 5, Kevin Birch will present a concert at Elm Street Congregational Church in Bucksport.
The concert will be a celebration of Felix Mendelssohn on his 200th anniversary.
Birch will play works of Mendelssohn, Bach, Fanny and Samuel Lange, with commentary on the church’s historic E. & G.G. Hook pipe organ that was built for the church in 1863.
Birch will present a similar program in Germany this summer at a Mendelssohn festival.
Birch holds a doctoral degree in musical arts from the University of Iowa, with previous studies at the New England Conservatory in Boston and the Sweelnick Conservatory in Amsterdam.
Since 1992, Birch has served as director of music at St. John’s Catholic Church in Bangor where, in addition to choir training and service playing, he directs the St. John’s Organ Society.
Birch is also a member of the faculty at the University of Maine’s School of the Performing Arts, where he teaches organ and harpsichord.
Birch has performed throughout the United States, in Europe and in South America as well as for several national conventions of the Organ Historical Society.
Recent performances in Europe include the opening concerts of the 2007 International Organ Festival in Berlin, the 2007 Meisterkonzert Series at the Kaiser Wilhelm Gedachtnis Kirche in Berlin and the dedication concert for the new Metzler organ in Auenstein, Switzerland, in 2008.
Birch has been broadcast in Luxembourg and on National Public Radio programs. He can be heard on Organ Historical Society recordings.
