Online lecture scheduled April 29

CASTINE — Speaker Anne Gass will present the first 2021 Zoom lecture for the Castine Historical Society on Thursday, April 29, at 4:30 p.m. The title of Gass’s talk is “Voting Down the Rose: Maine’s Fight for Woman Suffrage.”

Gass will describe how Maine women fought to gain the right to vote. During her talk she will discuss the role her great-grandmother, Florence Brooks Whitehouse, played in Maine’s suffrage movement. The talk will be accompanied by historic images. The lecture will last about 50 minutes, followed by time for questions.

Gass is the author of “Voting Down the Rose: Florence Brooks Whitehouse and Maine’s Fight for Woman Suffrage,” published in 2014. She speaks regularly about Florence Brooks Whitehouse and women’s rights history at conferences, historical societies, libraries, high schools and for other groups.
