ELLSWORTH — A growing interest in wood heat has led to the need for a local fireplace and stove business to expand.

This month, North Winds Stove & Fireplace is moving a half-mile north down Route 1A to the former location of Sandollar Pool & Spa.

Owner Paul Carey and his two sons, Ian and Dustin, have completely rebuilt and expanded the existing building. The business will have about 50 percent more space in the new location, which will allow the business to display more products.

The new location will also have a heated warehouse for repairing and rebuilding stoves.

“The demand for our products and services is excellent,” Carey said.

The fireplace and stove business is both recession-proof and boom-proof.

When times are hard, heating with wood helps people save money and be independent, Carey said. When times are good, people are remodeling and buying new stoves.
