Nonfiction and Fiction Writing Workshops Scheduled in Blue Hill

BLUE HILL — Essayist and fiction writer Susan Hand Shetterly and novelist Cynthia Thayer, both of The Turnstone Writers Workshop, are offering two writing workshops, “Making Scenes” and “Fiction Potpourri,” over four Saturdays in June at the Blue Hill Library.

Shetterly, of Surry, will offer instruction on the various structures of scenes in narrative nonfiction, memoir and fiction.

Participants will learn how to build scenes while taking into account pacing, dialogue, description, point of view and resolution. Students will examine how other writers construct scenes and will practice various methods in class.

Thayer, of Gouldsboro, will cover a different topic in fiction writing each week, including story structure, dialogue, description and point of view, through the use of short exercises and discussion.

Thayer’s workshop is geared for experienced writers and beginners who are writing short stories, novels or screenplays.

The workshops will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on June 6, 13, 20 and 27.

The price is $120 for a four-week session.

For more information, call Shetterly at 667-7212 and Thayer at 963-7771.
