Non-profit Payment Plan Rejected

BAR HARBOR — A proposal by town councilor Jane Disney to send a “nice letter” to all area nonprofits inviting a payment in lieu of taxes was defeated by the town council in a 3-3 vote Tuesday.

Ms. Disney hoped to send the letter, a draft of which was based on a similar letter from 2004, in an attempt to add to town coffers. Councilors against the proposal cited the poor results from the 2004 letter, and the inflammatory reaction it caused from some institutions. “They’re specifically exempt by law. I think we need to respect that,” councilor Paul Paradis said.

Councilors in support of the move cited the town’s “unique position,” with 22 percent of assessed value owned by nonprofits.
