New Toy Store Enjoying Success on Main Street

ELLSWORTH — The Union River Book & Toy Co. has had a successful first three months on Main Street.

“Sales have been great,” said owner Michael Curtis of Bar Harbor. Curtis said opening in January was ideal because not much else is happening then.

“We were selling 130 books a week, even in January,” said Curtis.

A customer remarked about the store’s practice of displaying most of the book titles straight-on.

Curtis explained to her that while running a children’s bookstore in the ’80s he learned people really like to see the titles. They do put a lot of thought into the covers, he said.

With 4,500 titles, it is difficult for Curtis to say which books are the most popular.

Of course, the vampire and fantasy genres are still holding court with young readers with L.J. Smith’s “The Vampire Diaries” and Erin Hunter’s series “Warriors” as well as the “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series by Rick Riordan.

But classic authors such as Roald Dahl (“The Witches,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox”) and Beverly Cleary (“Beezus and Ramona,” “The Mouse and the Motorcycle”) are still popular.

But, The Union River Book & Toy Co., true to its name, is not all about reading. The store also has fun and games.
