Moorings Pier Use Approved

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Despite objections from the owners of a neighboring business, the planning board here last week approved changes to the Moorings restaurant property that allows commercial use of the dock and the creation of an apartment for an employee.

As a result of a Jan. 7 unanimous decision by the planning board, Moorings owner Heath Higgins is allowed to use a dock at the restaurant for boat tours and kayak rentals. Mr. Higgins also is permitted to construct a small apartment as an accessory use.

The owners of the Moorings Inn, which abuts the restaurant, opposed the move, questioning whether the proper state and federal permits had been obtained for the pier and if the proposal constituted a new use because the pier has been used for dining.

Mr. Higgins said he plans to run two charter boats – a 40-passenger boat and an eight-passenger boat – and run a kayaking tour business from the location.
