ELLSWORTH — Maine Coast Memorial Hospital nurse Margaret Fox was nominated for “Caregiver of the Year Award” for achieving what her colleagues described as every nurse’s goal — excellence in nursing care and the respect of patients, families and peers.

A total of 24 hospitals submitted nominees to the Maine Hospital Association. The winner will be announced June 24 at the association’s Summer Forum.

“Although Margaret Fox was not selected for the award, the nomination submitted on her behalf was very strong in reflecting exceptional commitment to the delivery of care to patients and their families,” the MHA said in a statement.

Fox’s co-workers said she maintains a professional demeanor and helps make the Internal Medicine practice run smoothly.

Asked to describe instances where Fox has gone beyond the expected in her care of patients, colleagues noted her upbeat and positive attitude, her ability to make patients feel as though they are the sole patient in her care and her unwavering attention to a patient who was ill with cancer.

“She would stop in each week to work on a quilt that the patient wanted to finish before she died,” her co-workers said in nominating Fox for the award.

Fox also was cited for being active in her church, where she is a deacon, and community
