Man Loses Tax Dispute in Aurora

ELLSWORTH — A Brewer man who maintains that his hunting camp property in Aurora is overvalued, and therefore his property tax is unfair, has lost his appeal to the Hancock County commissioners.

In a unanimous decision Dec. 1, the commissioners said Robert Lawrence failed to prove his case. They said some of the comparable sales of property he produced did not have buildings on the lots, and in others, the commissioners found he had been assessed similarly.

“He needs to prove he was treated unfairly and he just didn’t prove that,” said Commissioner Stephen Joy. “He’s trying to prove he does not have a buildable lot, but he has a building on it. You can’t have it both ways, and I think that’s the crux of the problem.”
