Maks Grover Is Top Winner In 15th Annual Echo Lake Swim

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Maks Grover, 14, of Ellsworth took top honors in both the 500-yard and 1.5-mile swims at Saturday’s 15th annual Bill Reeve Echo Lake Swim.

Grover, who swims for the James Russell Wiggins Down East Family YMCA, completed the 500-yard swim in 5:59.90 with Sam Manhart, 40, of Hampden placing second in 6:07.62.

The top female swimmer in the 500-yard event was Bailey York, 13, of Naperville, Ill., who placed third overall in 7:11.34.

About 10 minutes after the completion of the 500, Manhart and Grover took early leads over the other swimmers in the 1.5-mile event.

The swimmers battled a fairly significant wind for the first three-quarters of a mile.

“I was a little concerned about the current when I got here this morning,” said Matt Montgomery, race director and swim coach at the Down East YMCA. “This was a new course from what we had done in previous years and it forced the swimmers to swim the longest leg directly against the wind.”

The race saw some exciting finishes, said Montgomery.

On the final leg, the swimmers had to round a buoy 250 yards offshore and race to the final buoy right in front of the onlookers.

Manhart and Grover were the first two to head toward the finish, with Grover reaching the finish buoy in 34:37.56 and Manhart coming in at 35:05.72.

“I gave it all I had at the end but couldn’t catch him,” said Manhart. “He swam a great race.”

Shauna Lynch, 20, of Ellsworth successfully defended her championship of last year.

As the female winner, Lynch completed the swim in 37.41.02, besting her time of last year by nearly two minutes and placing third overall.

The race’s youngest participants, 10-year-olds Sam Alvarado of Lamoine and Christian Jones of Surry, were among those completing the race about 30 minutes later.

They were accompanied by several of their older Down East Dolphin teammates, including recent YMCA national championship participants Cece McEachern and Keith Chandler, who swam with them for support.
