ELLSWORTH — Back-to-back distance races in two days?

For most runners, that’s a definite no-no.

But for Louie Luchini, it’s just another challenge.

And last weekend, after winning the Yesterday’s Children 5-Miler by a significant margin on Saturday at Ellsworth, the 28-year-old Luchini ran away from the rest of the field in winning the annual Sugarloaf 15K.

A field of 31 runners turned out to compete for $1,000 in cash prizes at the first Yesterday’s Children 5-Miler.

Luchini picked up the $250 men’s first prize, touring the course in 25 minutes and 1 second.

Runner-up Mike Bunker, 28, of Rockland was runner-up in 25:46 for a prize of $150, and the $100 third prize went to Andy Beardsley, 46, of Surry, who finished in 27:35.

Jennifer Dagan, 26, of Bangor claimed the $250 prize on the women’s side, finishing sixth overall in 31:07.

Elizabeth Brunton, 25, of Birch Harbor won the $150 second prize, placing seventh overall in 31:12, and Shannon Horton, 33, of Trenton took the $100 third prize, finishing 12th overall in 36:00.

Others placing among the top 10 were Jeremy Lisee, 39, of Milbridge, fourth in 27:54; Nikos Christ, 19, of Brooksville, fifth in 28:14; Chris Holt, 48, of Ellsworth, eighth in 34:27; Ryan Colbeth, 25, of Mariaville, ninth in 35:12; and Peter Beckett, 40, of Bar Harbor, 10th in 35:18.

At Sugarloaf in Carrabasset on Sunday, Luchini cruised to the win in 46:12.2, besting runner-up Robert Gomez of Westbrook by well over a minute.

Other Hancock County runners placing among the top 25 included Henry Bauer of Steuben, who was seventh in 56:06.5; Mark Wanner of Bar Harbor, 11th in 57:24.3; and Christopher Jones of Bucksport, 13th in 47:45.6.

Top 25 finishers in the women’s competition were Katrina Bisheimer of Bucksport, who placed ninth in 1:07:34.4, and Rebecca Pickering of Sedgwick, who was 19th in 1:11:45.3.
