“Local Yokels” program in Surry

SURRY — The Surry Historical Society will present its annual “Local Yokels” illustrated talk on Monday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. at Old Town Hall, 1217 Surry Road.

Presenters will relate little-known and astounding stories about the uncommon characters (and endearing animals) that once upon a time walked (or stalked) Surry neighborhoods.

Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

Featured stories will include:

  • George and Martha, the goats who walked to town each day to share a candy bar at Forrest Carter’s store.
  • The denizens of Camp 50, the legendary hunting shack in the North Bend wilderness.
  • Frank Hill, the clam digger who rescued a downed Navy pilot from the icy waters off Newbury Neck.
  • Horace Young, who asserted his “constitutional right” to walk in the middle of the road.
