Kaufman 5K to Inaugurate YMCA Series of Six Races

ELLSWORTH — The third annual Jerry Kaufman Memorial 5K Walk/Run on Saturday will kick off the “DEFY the ODDS” series of six races to be sponsored by the James Russell Wiggins Down East Family YMCA.

Registration for the Kaufman 5K will begin at 8 a.m. with a 9 a.m. start at the Moore Community Center (formerly the Moore School).

Other events in the series will include:

“Dare to Tri” Triathlon at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 8.

Main Street Memorial Mile at 9 a.m. Monday, May 31.

Bill Reeve Echo Lake Swim at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7.

Pancake 15K at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14.

Roger Willey 5K and 10K at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, to be followed by a race series celebration at 6 p.m.

The YMCA will be recording participant accomplishments throughout the series, and a minimum of three races is required for award eligibility.

The age category of each participant will be established by the individual’s age in his or her first competition of the calendar year.

The top 10 runners in each age group will be awarded points for each series race they complete, and awards will be based upon total points.

Overall awards will got the male and female with the highest point totals and age group awards will got to the top two participants in each age group: under 12, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 and over.

In the event of a tie, each particpant’s next best performance is considered until the tie is broken, with a coin flip as the final tie-breaker, if necessary.
