Island Country Club Opens May 7

DEER ISLE — The Island Country Club will be reopening on May 7 for its 84th summer season with a renovated nine-hole golf course and three Har-Tru tennis courts that will be ready to go by the end of May.

The public is encouraged to use the facilities and participate in yearly tournaments.

“We are excited about the upcoming season,” said clubhouse manager Karen Galella. “The new holes are looking great as the grow-in continues. We should be able to play them by July.”

The new seventh hole is a 285-yard par 4 that plays downhill to a two-tier green. The expanded eighth hole will give the course a par 5 (485 yards) with a well-guarded approach to the green.

The club’s Fairway Cafe will be open at the end of May and serve lunch again this summer from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. seven days a week.

Greg Kolakowski will join the staff as superintendent.

A graduate of the University of Maine, where he majored in outdoor recreation management, Kilakowski also is a graduate of University of Massachusetts School of Turf Management.

He started his career working at Sugarloaf Golf Course. After 12 years at Sugarloaf, he was appointed superintendent of the Causeway Golf Club and two years later as superintendent of the Northeast Harbor Golf Club on Mount Desert Island.

The Island Country Club is located in Sunset on Route 15 between Deer Isle and Stonington and is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
