MOUNT DESERT – The Maison Suisse Inn on Main Street in Northeast Harbor might be sold at auction on Saturday, Nov. 14, unless someone buys it before then. But someone might just do that.
After failing to sell the property through real estate agencies, owners David and Beth White decided to put it up for auction with Realty of Maine.
“There are some people on the fence, especially one, and we thought this might nudge them,” Mr. White said last week. “We are negotiating with somebody right now; we are waiting on an offer.”
Designed by shingle-style building pioneer Fred Savage, the inn was built as a private home in the late 1890s. The Whites bought it in 1984 and, after two years of restoration and renovation work, they opened it as an inn.
In 2002, the Whites built the Peregrine Lodge two lots down Kimball Lane from the Maison Suisse. The Peregrine Lodge also is up for auction.
