ELLSWORTH — The 2009 Greater Ellsworth Household Hazardous Waste Collection is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Ellsworth High School between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Residents of participating Hancock County towns will be able to drop off up to five gallons of liquid or 20 pounds of solid materials at no cost.
Participants currently include Deer Isle, Ellsworth, Gouldsboro, Hancock, Sorrento, Stonington, Trenton, Winter Harbor and the Unorganized Territories.
Pre-registration with your local town office is necessary. Please call them in advance for registration details. Residents of non-participating towns may participate for a fee that will be charged on-site according to the amount of material delivered.
Hazardous household waste includes materials such as non-latex paint, photo and pool chemicals, unused household cleaning products, paint thinners, used antifreeze, old gasoline and other fuels and battery acid.
Universal waste, which includes rechargeable batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, mercury thermometers, old televisions and computer monitors, will also be accepted from residents of all towns except for Hancock.
Hancock residents are instead asked to take UW materials to Coastal Recycling on Route 182.
