High-end Rental Case Hits Court

BAR HARBOR — The owner of a $2 million property who is fighting for the right to keep renting her house by the week is due to have her case heard in court this month.

Karol A. Foss, whose primary residence is in Florida, is the owner of Anchorhold, a seven-bedroom mansion on Harbor Lane, just outside of the downtown area. Ms. Foss purchased the 5,364-square-foot house in October 2008, with every intention to rent it out by the week, as was being done at the time of her purchase.

In February 2009, however, Ms. Foss was denied a vacation rental permit from the town because the house is not her primary residence, and she does not qualify for a homestead tax exemption.
