Helping Hands Food Drive at MMA

CASTINE — Throughout November, Sodexo Campus Services, the food service provider at Maine Maritime Academy, will participate in a company-wide, employee-driven initiative to help feed thousands of hungry Americans.

The company invites student and staff groups and the community at large to participate.

A mass collection will be held Thursday, Nov. 12, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., in the Harold Alfond Student Center lobby.

This year’s Helping Hands program aims to attain the record for the largest food drive by a non-charitable organization in a 24-hour period. Donations to the drive will be sent to the Good Shepherd Food Banks in Brewer and Bangor. Last year, despite its small size, the academy donated more than 3,000 pounds of food and was named one of the top 20 contributing colleges nationwide.

MMA students and staff, along with groups in the greater Castine community, are encouraged to collect nonperishable food items in the days leading up to the mass collection day Nov. 12. The public is also welcome to make cash donations of $1, $5 and $10 to the food bank. Donations to Sodexo can only be delivered and accepted on the collection day.
