ELLSWORTH — Friends in Action, an organization devoted to providing rides to appointments and other services for older adults, is hosting its first 5K walk/run fund-raiser on Saturday, Sept. 22.

One woman planning to participate, Sylvia Lock, also is a Friends in Action client.

Lock will be 89 in November. She lost her husband of 52 years, Paul Sr., to pancreatic cancer in 1998.

Lock began volunteering at the Maine Coast Memorial Hospital Mary Dow Center.

“The nurses were so good to him,” she said. “I felt like I had to give something back.”

In the intervening years, Lock met a good male friend and dancing partner, who passed away in 2010.

So Lock, who could be described as a social butterfly, started looking for more interaction.

“I got started by going to the coffee hour,” Lock said of Friends in Action. “That was three years ago. Something to do on a free morning and to meet people and socialize.”

Lock also goes to a weekly yoga class at Friends in Action, which is headquartered in the former Bryant E. Moore School on State Street. She also goes to a weekly computer workshop.

Lock is planning to walk the 5K.

“I want to stay in condition,” Lock said. “I want to stay in under a 16-minute mile.”

Lock visits Florida in the winter and has competed in several 5Ks there.

Registration for the walk starts at 8 a.m. at Ellsworth High School.

The route will start and end at the high school and include the new Ellsworth Falls Rail Trail and surrounding neighborhoods.
