Former U.S. Comptroller General To Speak on Federal Budget, Debt

ELLSWORTH — David M. Walker, comptroller general of the United States from 1998 to 2008, will address an Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce “Eggs and Issues” gathering Thursday, Aug. 20, from 7:30 until 9 a.m. at the White Birches on Route 1.


His presentation is this year’s edition of the Wiggins Lecture, a series sponsored by The Ellsworth American in honor of its former editor and publisher, James Russell Wiggins.

As comptroller general and head of the Government Accountability Office (GAO) for a decade, Walker was outspoken in his commitment to addressing the nation’s fiscal challenges. He brought about major changes at the GAO.

No longer the government’s chief auditor, Walker has kept his hand in as chairman of the United Nations Independent Audit Advisory Committee and president and CEO of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, which works advocates fiscal responsibility on the part of government, and reforms to entitlements, health care and tax policy.
