BAR HARBOR — Reel Pizza in Bar Harbor will be the venue for a screening of “Out in the Silence,” an award-winning documentary about the struggle of a gay teen and his mother against a school that looks the other way when he is brutally attacked for coming out in his small high school.

The film is by Joe Wilson, who once lived in the same town, and Dean Hamer, who have their own struggle to face after announcing their wedding in the hometown newspaper.

The screening on Sunday, Oct. 23, is sponsored by the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN) as a fund-raiser for northern Maine high school Gay-Straight Alliances. A student art show, student voice performances, raffle and discussion will be included in the event, which is et for 1 to 4 p.m. Tickets are available at the door; $10 for adults and $2 for students.
