ELLSWORTH — A recorded jailhouse phone call between a father and son led to their convictions for falsely accusing a Maine State Police sergeant of stealing money.

A “smoking gun” was how District Attorney Michael Povich described a transcript of the phone call, which was played during the pair’s trial in Hancock County Superior Court Friday.

“The jury was out about 15 minutes and decided they were liars,” said Povich.

Steven Harmon, 45, and Tyler Harmon, 20, were each found guilty of unsworn falsification and filing a false public report. The two, who were represented by Bangor attorney Julio DeSanctis, have already filed an appeal.
