Events Scheduled In Wildlands

ORLAND — A birding path workday is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15, in the Great Pond Mountain Wildlands.

Volunteers will spend a morning clearing the final stretch of the scenic birding path to Hothole Brook.

Plans are to meet at 9 a.m. at the Wildlands South Gate. Volunteers should bring work gloves, bug spray, water and a snack.

Also on Sept. 15, a series of “Peak-a-Week” hikes will be starting with a climb up Dedham’s 1,234-foot Bald Mountain with Will Houston.

Hikers should meet at the base of the mountain parking lot just off Bald Mountain Road at 9 a.m. The 1.4-mile hike is short, but steep and of moderate difficulty.

Other hikes are scheduled for Sept. 22 and 29 and Oct. 6 and 12.

Wildlands habitat workdays are scheduled for Sept. 16, 23 and 30.

On Friday, Sept. 21, at 6:30 p.m., a primitive fire-starting demonstration with Isaac Dorr will be held in the Wildlands.

The Wildlands South Gate on will be open from 6:15 on. Drive in about a mile to the clearing on the Valley Road. All ages are welcome.
