Event Set to Fight Illiteracy

BAR HARBOR – With high illiteracy rates linked to high crime rates, police on Mount Desert Island and writers have joined forces to create a literacy effort that will promote local children reading.

Approximately 30 authors from across the country will be at the first annual Bar Harbor Book Festival on September 12 and 13 at the Bar Harbor Municipal Building from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.

Authors will be available to sign and sell books, read excerpts, and present panels about craft. Law enforcement officers also will be there. Admission is free. Donations and proceeds will help support literacy initiatives in Hancock County.
