Ellsworth Police: Two Charged During Drunk Driving Detail

ELLSWORTH — Two people were arrested during a drunk driving detail Friday night.


Officer Shawn Willey arrested Ruth Brendle, 67, of Gouldsboro on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant.

Another motorist, Muler Rinvil, 42, of Pompano Beach, Fla., was arrested on a charge of operating an unregistered motor vehicle.

Willey gave two warnings for speed and a motor vehicle defect.

Police held a sobriety checkpoint on High Street Aug. 31 but did not charge anyone with drunk driving. However, officers did find 2 ounces of marijuana in one vehicle.

Sgt. Glenn Moshier said 632 vehicles were stopped on High Street between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m.

Officers checked eight motorists for possible impairment but no charges resulted, Moshier said.

However, officers did smell marijuana from one vehicle and a search of the trunk allegedly yielded 2 ounces of marijuana, according to Moshier.

Ethan Miller, 19, of Lamoine was summoned on a charge of possession of a usable amount of marijuana.

The Ellsworth Police Department received a grant from the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety to perform the checkpoint.

Police arrested three people at a Franklin Street residence Sept. 2 after getting a call from a resident who was concerned that a domestic dispute was occurring.

Officer Shawn Willey said the dispute was just an argument. No arrests arose from the dispute.

However, two people at the residence had outstanding warrants and another had allegedly violated his bail conditions, police reported.

Austin Kleffman, 22, of Trenton was arrested on a warrant charging furnishing liquor to a minor.

Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy Shane Campbell assisted and arrested Chelsea Thompson, 20, of Ellsworth on a warrant charging unpaid fines.

Richard Brown, 22, of Sullivan was arrested on a charge of violating conditions of his release.

Sgt. Glenn Moshier said Brown had allegedly tested positive for OxyContin, which violates his bail conditions.


Several homeowners in north Ellsworth on Branch Pond Road, Walls Farm Road and Winkumpaugh Road had mailboxes and posts stolen Sept. 2 to Sept. 3.


Two cars collided Monday after the driver of one of the vehicles turned left from Court Street onto Route 172 and failed to yield to a car traveling south on Route 172, police reported.

Virginia McGuire, 74, of Cutler was driving a 2003 Ford, which struck a 1995 Saab operated by Arthur Stone, 67, of Mariaville, police said.

Police estimated $2,000 in damage to each car.

A car struck a pickup truck after the driver of the car pulled out of a parking lot onto High Street and cut across two lanes to make a left turn, police said.

Crystal Beal, 28, of Chokoloskee, Fla., was driving a 2010 Toyota, which struck a 1994 Ford truck that Gary Perkins, 62, of Ellsworth was driving south, police said.

Police estimated $2,000 in damage for the car and $1,000 in damage for the truck.

Beal was summoned on a charge of operating after suspension.
