Ellsworth Police: Speed Enforcement Detail Results in 30 Tickets

ELLSWORTH — Officers issued speeding tickets to 30 motorists out of 33 who were stopped during a speed enforcement detail on Route 1A July 21.

Sgt. Shawn Willey said the tickets issued were for speeds ranging from 70 mph to 83 mph in a 55-mph zone.

The remaining three motorists stopped for speeding were issued warnings. One motorist was given a warning about not wearing a seat belt. Police arrested on woman stopped for speeding on a charge of operating after suspension.

Police Chief John DeLeo noted that the department does not get any portion of the fines paid. All fines go to the state.

The two-hour speed detail was funded with a grant from the Bureau of Highway Safety.

DeLeo said warnings depend on the officer.

“We’ll look at the person’s driving history,” the chief said. “A lot may depend on time of day, amount of traffic, weather conditions, the road you’re actually on.”
