Ellsworth Police: Driver Leaves Accident Scene, Charged with OUI

ELLSWORTH — A Brewer motorist who allegedly hit another vehicle and left the scene in Trenton early Monday was stopped and arrested on High Street.

Officer Chad Wilmot arrested Richard Clark, 39, on charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant, operating after suspension and leaving the scene of a property damage accident.

Clark’s vehicle allegedly sideswiped another vehicle, which had swerved out of the way to avoid a head-on collision, Hancock County Sheriff’s deputies reported. The Sheriff’s Office took the initial call about the accident.

Clark’s blood alcohol level was .20 percent, which is over twice the legal limit of .08 percent, police said.

Erratic Operation

Police stopped a motorist after taking complaints that her vehicle had crossed the center line and nearly hit several other vehicles July 9 on Route 1A.

The motorist told the officer she had been receiving text messages on her cell phone and didn’t realize her operation was so poor. The motorist said she would be more mindful.

Officer Gil Jameson helped a group of 22 children and three adults who got lost in the woods off Stargazer Way July 7.

Jameson went to the end of a nearby road and kept sounding his horn until the group exited the woods. The explorers were unharmed.

A northbound sport utility vehicle, which was turning left into Wal-Mart from Route 3 July 8 failed to yield the right of way to a southbound car, striking it on the driver’s side, police said.

Ashley Murad, 18, of Bar Harbor had been driving a 2006 Subaru SUV that struck a 2007 Honda operated by Michael James, 58, of Bar Harbor, police said.

Police estimated $8,000 damage to each vehicle.
